Hey, there! My name is Abigail Smith, but I go by Abi (any pronouns). Iām a neuroqueer, multiply-disabled therapist passionate about working with queer, neurodivergent, and disabled individuals and relationships. I do my best work with autistic folx, ADHD, bipolar, chronic pain and disability, queer individuals and relationships, mixed neurotype relationships, complex trauma, chronic shame, anxiety, and depression. I work well with adult-diagnosed and self-diagnosed neuroqueer folx who feel as though they need a neuroqueer therapist who can understand them and help them find tangible ways of coping, healing, and thriving - not just surviving.
My approach to therapy is always collaborative and always affirming. I pull from queer and narrative theories, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and EMDR and somatic processing. I believe that you are the expert in your life and that people are not problems - the problem is the problem and together we can find effective ways of contending with it.
Outside of client work, I like engaging in my special interests ā reading fantasy, making art, becoming emotionally attached to fictional characters, napping with my three cats, and finding joyful ways to move my body. I love spending time with my chosen family and friends, info-dumping with my partner, and being active with my local library and reading groups.
Technical Things:
I received my undergraduate degree in psychology and health psychology from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2019, and my graduate degree from Southern Methodist University in 2023, where I specialized in trauma-informed and queer-affirming therapy. I am additionally EMDR-trained and a certified Gender Affirming Mental Health Professional.
I am an LPC-Associate under the supervision of Beck Munsey, PhD, NCC, LPC-S (Texas License: 63561).
